UMC bishops mourn 41st US President George H. Bush

The Council of Bishops offers this call to prayer and condolences for the family of former President George H.W. Bush, who passed away late Friday night.

Letter from COB President Bishop Carter to President George W. Bush

Dear President Bush,

On behalf of the Council of Bishops of the United Methodist Church, please accept our sincere condolences on the passing of your beloved father and former President George Herbert Walker Bush.

We pray that God’s sustaining grace and strength will surround you and the entire Bush family in the days to come. And we pray that you and Mrs. Bush will know the peace that passes human understanding, even in the midst of this loss.

We join you in giving thanks for the lives and legacies of your father and also your mother, the former First Lady Barbara Bush.

We rejoice in the light that flowed from their lives into the life of this nation. We are grateful for their strength, dignity, humility, civility, service and sacrifice.

Please know that we join you in grieving this loss. Yet we do not grieve as those who have no hope. We trust in Jesus, who is the resurrection and the life, and who goes to prepare a place for us.

With prayers for you, we recall the final words of John Wesley: “The best of all is that God is with us.”

The Peace of the Lord,

Bishop Kenneth H. Carter, Jr., President
Council of Bishops
The United Methodist Church
