The Ark of the Covenant

The past few weeks Pastor Nancy has been teaching about the Book of Exodus and the departure of the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt.

The Ten Commandments

Moses led the Israelites from Egypt–their destination was the Promised Land.   God guided them by sending a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.  God also fed them with manna and gave them water out of a solid rock.   Because of their frequent complaining and failure to trust him, however, God made them stay in the desert for forty years before entering the Promised Land.   God gave them the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai during the Exodus.

The Ark of the Covenant

The Ark of the Covenant was a sacred chest built by the Israelites, under exact specifications given to them by God.  God told Moses to place the Tablets of Stone on which the Ten Commandments were inscribed inside the Ark.  Later, a pot of manna and Aaron’s staff were added.

Learn about the Ark of the Covenant from this video clip from the “Chuck Knows Church” series provided by The United Methodist Church news organization.  In this episode, Chuck explores the history of this gold-plated chest. Chuck Knows Church: The Original Series aims to interpret the objects, symbols, and terms we often hear in church.  Each video features “Chuck” who helps us learn more about our church while inviting us to engage in deeper conversation with our pastor.
