Our Promises

Pastor Nancy Davis

Below are excerpts from this past Sunday’s sermon from Pastor Nancy Davis . . .

Remember the promises you made when you became a member of Elkhorn Hills UMC?   What better time to refresh ourselves about these promises and see how faithfully we are keeping them than on the first day of the new year?
WILL YOU BE LOYAL TO ELKHORN HILLS UNITED METHODIST CHURCH AND WILL YOU SUPPORT THIS CHURCH WITH YOUR PRAYERS, YOUR PRESENCE, YOUR GIFTS AND YOUR SERVICE?
I WILL.
  • Have you been praying for your church?  First of all, have you been praying?  Are you too busy to take time to talk to God every day?  If so, then you are way, way too busy for your own good.  Prayer is a necessary part of a Christian life.  And when you begin to pray every day, remember to pray for your church, for the new pastor who is coming, for the programs of the church, for the church staff.  Pray that the church will use the days of 2017 to take the message of the Gospel into the community in new and wonderful ways.  You promised.

  • Be present in worship.  This used to mean every week, unless you were sick.  It should still mean that, but our society has made Sunday into just another day.  Some of us have to work, so that changes things for those who do.  Some of us find that other activities have been scheduled for Sunday mornings that mean we have to make tough choices.  Some of us are “out of the habit” of attending church, meaning we do not schedule church attendance on our calendars like we do everything else.  It is important to be in worship every week.  You promised.

  • Gifts.  We just finished our annual stewardship campaign.  Some of us have made our new year’s pledges. Some of us will give faithfully but do not pledge.  Some of us will not give anything.  We make our offerings to the church not because the church needs it but because we need it.  We need to show our gratitude to God for all the ways in which he has blessed us.  And we do this by returning to God a portion of what He has given to us.  It’s as simple as that.  So we use our financial resources to support the programs and mission of our church family.  Remember – you promised.

  • Services.  All of us have been given talents and abilities.  We are to use these to serve the people of God.  To make their lives better, to make their lives more joyful, to lead them to Jesus.  If we take all the various abilities represented in our church family we can, working together, do great things.  If you haven’t been actively involved in one of the programs of the church, 2017 is the time to do so.  If you don’t see a place where you feel your own talents could be used please come talk to me and I will help you find a place, even if we have to create a new program – which would be great.  Use those talents and abilities to serve God and His people.    Remember – you promised.
This Sunday we will be back to our regularly scheduled worship times – 9:00 and 10:30 and our Sunday School classes will resume as well.  Hope to see you then!  Happy 2017 to you all!
Grace and Peace,
Nancy
