The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to alleviating human suffering around the globe. UMCOR is a ministry of The United Methodist Church, and our goal is to assist the most vulnerable persons affected by crisis or chronic need without regard to their race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. We believe all people have God-given worth and dignity. Elkhorn Hills UMC supports UMCOR through our mission shares.
UMCOR’s work reaches people in more than 80 countries, including the United States. We provide humanitarian relief when war, conflict, or natural disaster disrupt life to such an extent that communities are unable to recover on their own. UMCOR provides these survivors not only temporary relief but long-term education, training, and support.
UMCOR spends 100 percent of designated donations on the projects our donors specify. When UMCOR donors give their time, money, and supplies, they join UMCOR as the hands and feet of Christ.
Relief Supply Kits
Relief-supply kits help provide care for the most vulnerable people during times of crisis. Health kits, sewing kits, school kits, bedding kits, birthing kits, and cleaning buckets are collected by generous donors across the United States. These items are then sent to one of two supply depots, where volunteers assemble, verify, and pack the kits so that they can be sent to where they are needed most.
School Kits
In some countries, children don’t have books or school supplies. Many have no schoolrooms; classes are held in inadequate or half-destroyed buildings, tents, or even the open air. School kits may be these children’s only educational resources.
In the Fall, our Elkhorn Hills Knit and Sew Group will be organizing school supplies for school bags, which will go to UMCOR. School Kit Materials are listed below.
School Kit Materials
- 1 pair blunt scissors
- 3 pads of paper
- 1 hand-held pencil sharpener
- 1 30-centimeter ruler
- 6 unsharpened pencils
- 1 2-inch or larger-size eraser
- 1 24-count box of crayons
- 1 14×16 inch cloth bag
Health Kits
Health kits provide basic necessities to people who have been forced to leave their homes because of human conflict or natural disaster. Health kits are also used as learning tools in personal hygiene, literacy, nutrition, and cooking classes. Kits also help sustain everyday life for people who lack ready access to essential supplies. They provide vital support for UMCOR’s global development work and make a tangible difference in people’s lives.
