Message from UMC Great Plains Conference on “Hurricane Harvey”

As we continue to pray for the safety and recovery of people facing the wrath of Hurricane Harvey, we also continue with our push for prayer for the United Methodist Church during this season of discernment. The Great Plains Conference is set to pray continuously Sept. 3-9. Serve by Participating in Week of Prayer

The Great Plains Conference is taking part in a 75-week effort known as “Praying Our Way Forward.” Our overall theme for the week comes from Ephesians 4:3, which instructs us

“Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”

This turning to God in prayer is an effort to unify our thoughts and meditations on our relationship with God and with one another even as a group of 32 people work together as the Bishops’ Commission on a Way Forward to explore resolution to differing views on human sexuality and gender norms. The desire is for discernment, the unity of the United Methodist Church and that we can be witnesses for Christ in today’s different ministry contexts and ever-changing world.

Whether in your home or at your church – perhaps in some special place you have discovered for reflection – please take time each of the seven days from Sept. 3-9 to pause for prayer. Below are some resources provided to help you get started.

Read an introduction to the week of Praying Our Way Forward.

Bishop Ruben Saenz Jr. has provided a prayer that will be shared with the denomination during the week designated for prayer in the Great Plains Conference.

Read daily prayers, scripture and reflections on those resources for each day of Sept. 3-9.

The conference’s goal is to have at least one person praying from 12:01 a.m. Sept.3 to 11:59 p.m. Sept. 9.

To help us track our progress, please register. Simply input your church’s name, city and state, as well as your pastor’s name and email address. You’ll then select a day or days an an hour or hours you choose to pray.

Thank you for your participation!
