Get Them Talking: Family

This article comes from the umc.org. May is Christian Home Month, a time for celebrating our families. Let’s give thanks to God for those who know and love us best.

Get Them Talking is a series of monthly resources to help families lead conversations about issues of faith during dinner, devotions, a drive or anytime .

Scripture Reading

“So he went back to Nazareth with them, and lived obediently with them. His mother held these things dearly, deep within herself. And Jesus matured, growing up in both body and spirit, blessed by both God and people.”

Luke 2:51-52, The Message

Reflection

The Bible tells us only one story about Jesus’ life during the time between his birth and his baptism: the time he stayed behind in the Temple (Luke 2:41-52). In the closing words of that story, we hear how Jesus’ childhood family helped him grow in body and spirit.

Our families are those who hold us dearly, deep within themselves, as Luke describes Jesus’ mother doing. They help us grow “in both body and spirit,” no matter how old we are, and bless us.

Get them talking

  • How is our family like other families? How are we unique?
  • Take turns sharing favorite family memories. Think about vacations, holidays, important moments, funny stories and other special times.
  • How have family members helped you grown in body and spirit?

Prayer

Dear God, thank you for our family, and remind us that we are growing in body and spirit every day. Amen.

Activity

Go through family photos together. Note places of growth. Share stories of the love you experience in your family.
