September 20th BBQ and Quilt Auction
Crowds of people wandered throughout Camp Fontanelle’s grounds during the camp’s annual barbecue. An estimated 1,400 people filed in and out throughout the day, said Kent Van Horn, Camp Fontanelle board member.
The hum of tractors was audible as dozens of people enjoyed hayrack rides, and children’s laughter was abundant as they ran through the 9-plus-acre YMCA-themed corn maze. Other activities included youth face painting, puppet shows presented by MOM (Methodists on a Mission), tree climbing, a bounce house and live music in the 7:24 shelter throughout the day.
One of the day’s highlights consisted of silent and live auctions, which helps raise funds for the camp’s Christian ministry. Proceeds from the event went toward funding the numerous camps that are held for youth during summer months. In 2014, more than $40,000 was raised from the event, which is the camp’s only yearly organized fundraiser. All told, the barbecue and fundraiser makes up around 11 percent of Camp Fontanelle’s budget.
