The 2016 Cave Quest VBS was awesome!  Ashley Bossert, Children’s Ministries Director reported that the event was a big success with 126 kids attending.  The church was transformed to a cave with stalactites and stalagmites, stalacites, bats, moss, rock formations, iridescent colors, and radiating light.

The spelunkers learned that Jesus is the one who lights our way and gives us hope for each new day.  His love illuminates when the path is dark.  Cave Quest VBS encouraged our kids to follow Jesus where ever he will lead them!

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.  Proverbs 3:6

Message

Throughout the week, the kids explored new ways that Jesus helps us.  These were the nightly themes:

  • Jesus Gives Us Hope (Psalms 71:5) – The prophets foretell Jesus’ birth (John 1:1-18; Isaiah 9:2)
  • Jesus Gives Us Courage (Matthew 14:27) – Jesus & Peter walk on water. (Matthew 14:22-36)
  • Jesus Gives Us Direction (Proverbs 3:6) – Jesus sheds light on how to live. (Matthew 5-7)
  • Jesus Gives Us Love (1 John 3:16) – Jesus dies and comes back to life. (Luke 23:1-24:12)
  • Jesus Gives Us His Power (2 Corinthians 4:7) – Jesus ascends and empowers his followers. (Acts 1:1-11)

Mission

nfc imageThe Mission of Elkhorn Hills United Methodist Vacation Bible School is to support Nebraska Families Collaborative!!!  How awesome is that!!!  Children supporting children!!!

Children in foster care sometimes aren’t living with their own families. They may be moved to a safe location without being able to bring any of their own things with them.  The “Fostering Hope” mission provides children entering foster care with a few things of their own during this confusing transitional time.

Several VBS crafts focused on our “Fostering Hope” mission project.   One night VBS participants decorated the canvas “Hope Bags” that we will fill using our VBS donations.  On another night, VBS participants stuffed fabric hearts to bring love to a foster child receiving a “Hope Bag.”  The donations we collected will be used to purchase items to fill the “Hope Bags” with the following items:

  • Comfort item (stuffed heart or stuffed animal).   The fabric and labor have been generously donated by our Knit & Sew group.
  • Toothbrush/toothpaste.
  • Night Light.
  • Snack item (Goldfish Crackers).
  • Book/Toy.
  • Small Blanket.

The Nebraska Families Collaborative posted this message:  “Thank you to Elkhorn Hills United Methodist Church Vacation Bible School for choosing to support Nebraska Families Collaborative through their Fostering Hope Program! This year 125 children helped fill 100 Hope bags that we can give to children entering foster care. Children supporting children – how awesome is that!

Thank you

A huge “Thank You” to all the people involved in making it happen.  Over 65 volunteers had fun with the kids each night.  Thank you to all the members of the congregation for their donations of supplies, time, and talents.  Thank you to all the people who helped with the decorations and the muscle in putting up and taking down.

A special “Thank You” to Tyler Hughes and Heather McBeth for their leadership of the music each night.  They had fun and made it fun for the kids, too.  The music was awesome!

One of our volunteers was inspired to write this after VBS Day 3:  “What a fabulous evening!!! God provided us with beautiful weather to enjoy activities outside as we discover CAVE QUEST ~ Following Jesus The Light of the World!!!   It’s a beautiful thing to watch children tell of how they see Jesus working in the world!!!”
